24 Symposium of Palaeontological Preparation and Conservation with the Geological Curators' Group
31st August - 4th September
Registration for the 2015 SVPCA and SPPC/GCG is now open. Please visit the SVPCA website (www.svpca.org) to register for either, or both, of the conferences. Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email directing you to the secure online payment page on the University of Southampton website. The deadline for registration is Friday 24th July. As in previous years, registration fees also reflect the cost of booking lecture theatres and associated facilities. We have endeavoured to keep the conference fees to the absolute minimum and in particular have tried to keep student registration low. Thanks to The Palaeontological Association for a generous grant towards the running of the conference again this year.
|Full Rate||Student Rate|
|SVPCA||£ 50||£ 20|
|SPPC||£ 20||£ 10|
|Both Conferences||£ 65||£ 25|
|Conference Banquet||£ 20|
|Conference T-Shirt||£ 17|
|Field Trips||£25 each|
Abstracts for oral and poster presentations can be submitted after registration via the SVPCA website. Abstracts should be no more than 250 words in length and will be evaluated by an abstract committee led by Mark Young and Darren Naish. There will be a dedicated poster session this year and so we particularly encourage poster submissions. Your preference for an oral or poster presentation will be taken into account as far as possible, but we are restricted in how many oral presentations it is possible to fit into each day. Submitted abstracts will be collated into a symposium abstracts volume which will be made available in PDF format on the SVPCA website.
The deadline for abstract submission is Friday 24th July.
The conference logo this year was designed by Stu Pond (www.stupond.com) and represents the Isle of Wight armoured dinosaur Polacanthus. Conference T-shirts with this logo (designed by Jessica Lawrence Wujek and Stu Pond) will cost £17 and can be ordered at the same time as registration (the online payment page will allow you to select your size). T-shirts should be pre-ordered –a very limited number will be available for sale during the conference.
There will be two field trips available this year, the first run in collaboration with the Portsmouth Flugsaurier meeting (www.flugsaurier2015.com). Each trip costs £25 (to cover coach travel). Places must be reserved at the same time as conference registration.
Saturday August 29th (NB date change from announced in the 1st Circular) - This year there will be a pre-conference one-day field trip to the Jurassic Coast (Kimmeridge). If you would like to book a place on this trip then please email David Martill ([email protected]).
Friday 4th Sept - A post-conference field trip, including an afternoon break at the Needles Park (http://www.theneedles.co.uk/) (a chance to ride the famous chairlift and see the coloured sands, etc etc), will be on the Isle of Wight. We will visit some key Wealden localities including Brook Bay. If you would like to book a place on this trip then please email Gareth Dyke ([email protected]).
Monday August 31st - The evening registration and ice-breaker event will take place at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.
Wednesday 2nd Sept - Reception and annual auction at Seacity Museum, Southampton. This evening event will, as always, include the SVPCA auction in aid of the Jones-Fenleigh fund. Please could anyone with any items for submission to the auction inform the organisers via [email protected]
Thursday 3rd Sept - The SVPCA banquet will take place at Kutis Royal Thai, Southampton Water. Places at the banquet should be booked at the same time as registration via the online payment page.
The Jones-Fenleigh fund awards grants covering registration fees, accommodation costs and basic subsistence to help delegates with no institutional financial support to attend the SVPCA.
Applications should be sent to [email protected] before Friday 26th June 2015. These should include an abstract, a covering letter explaining your circumstances and need, and (where appropriate) a letter from your employer/institution supporting your application and confirming that you will not be financially supported by them. Selection of successful candidates will be made on the basis of the relevance, originality and the general quality of the abstract. For more information click on the Jones-Fenleigh tab on the SVPCA website.
SPPC is jointly hosted this year with Dinosaur Isle (Gary Blackwell, Sandown, Isle of Wight) and the Hampshire Cultural Trust (Christine Taylor, Winchester). On the afternoon of 31st August SPPC delegates will have the chance to visit the HCT collections at Winchester.
If anyone would like to arrange a research visit to either the HCT collections ([email protected]) or the Dinosaur Isle collections ([email protected]), or enquire about collections holdings, please make contact with Christine and/or Gary. They would appreciate as much advance notice as possible (both collections are likely to be inaccessible during the SVPCA meeting unless pre-arranged).
Delegates should make their own arrangements for accommodation. We recommend booking accommodation sooner rather than later as Southampton is a cruise city, and hotels often fill up around when cruises are arriving or leaving the city.
There are many hotels, guest houses and self-catering apartments in the centre of Southampton, close to Ocean Village, and just a few minutes’ walk from the conference venue. Availability and prices can be found at:
Some suggestions for accommodation in the city centre (approximately a 10-15 minute walk from the National Oceanography Centre) include:
- Travelodge West Quay – brand new hotel, rooms from £38/night
- Mercure Dolphin Hotel – rooms from £73/night
- Ibis Budget Southampton West Quay – rooms from £41/night
- The Star Hotel, High Street Southampton (most haunted hotel in the south of
England) – rooms from £35/night
Additionally, Unilink bus services (U1C) will take you directly to the National Oceanography Centre for £2 if you prefer to stay further away. Any questions please ask us!
